Twelve Step Therapy on Long Island

Twelve Step Study Group on Long Island

Twelve Step study groups serve as a unique model to instill self-change in the recovering individual by first helping him or her understand and admit he/she has an addiction problem that is out of the individual's control. Although traditionally used as a therapy approach for alcohol addiction, known as AA or Alcoholics Anonymous, 12 Step study group has been adopted as a therapy approach for nearly all forms of substance abuse and addictions, including process addictions such as gambling or sex addictions. Twelve Step groups are face-to-face discussion meetings between members and a facilitator (or group leader). In a typical 12 Step study group, usually a therapist or a counselor serves as the group facilitator.

Long Island Center for Recovery’s Twelve Step study group is offered for individuals who are attending our addiction treatment programs (inpatient or outpatient), and for individuals in the community who want to take part in this supportive therapeutic service. By participating in a Twelve Step study group, members are able to share their experiences and hardships, acquire new skills from fellow recovering individuals and develop their own support network.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 12 Step self-help groups promote abstinence by helping individuals understand 3 key concepts:

  • “Acceptance, which includes the realization that drug addiction is a chronic, progressive disease over which one has no control, that life has become unmanageable because of drugs, that willpower alone is insufficient to overcome the problem, and that abstinence is the only alternative”
  • “Surrender, which involves giving oneself over to a higher power, accept the fellowship and support structure of other recovering addicted individuals, and follow the recovery activities laid out by the 12 step program”
  • “Active involvement in 12 step meetings and related activities” to ensure the individual's recovery can benefit from the 12 step group at the optimal level.”
