Addiction Treatment on Long Island - Meditation Practice

Meditation along with yoga is one of the most practiced holistic therapies offered at comprehensive addiction treatment facilities. Meditation, also called ‘mindfulness meditation,’ is a healing practice of the mind and body where an individual becomes aware of the nature of his or her present experience in order to “wake up” from a regular state of consciousness. In addiction treatment, meditation is utilized to bring concentration, clarity of thinking and optimism while fostering a sense of calm within a person. In using breathing techniques and achieving optimum states of relaxation, the individual in recovery is able to escape the stress and anxieties that are often associated with his or her addiction. Also, through meditation individuals can reach a better understanding of themselves which can help them stop negative and compulsive habits. Incorporated into addiction treatment, meditation supports the efforts of recovering individuals by:

  • Helping the individual change character flaws that affect their addiction
  • Making the individual aware of his or her surroundings
  • Reducing emotional stress/negative mood
  • Increasing the ability to concentrate
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Increasing the gray matter of the brain (linked to learning, memory and emotional regulation)

Clients attending inpatient addiction treatment at Long Island Center for Recovery are invited to participate in meditation therapy sessions. Also, we encourage the exploration and practice of other holistic activities that are conducive to promoting a better physical, emotional and mental health to support the recovery process after completion of treatment.

"Dedicating some time to meditation is a meaningful expression of caring for yourself that can help you move through the mire of feeling unworthy of recovery. As your mind grows quieter and more spacious, you can begin to see self-defeating thought patterns for what they are, and open up to other, more positive options."
